Durga Puja

Durga Puja marks the victory of Goddess Durga over the evil demon Mahishasura. A triumph of good over evil, thus, it is a festival of worship, joy and merrymaking.
Assam is one of those few states that celebrate Durga Puja with much pomp and show. It is a major and the biggest festival of the year for the Hindus.
Here are some pictures of the idols of Devi Maa and pandals of Durga Puja I visited during the celebration in my city.

  3. That was good pics on the Durga pooja festivities.
What makes me wonder is why is it in a country that revere the Goddess as Mother , find much atrocities on women?

    1. Thank you Shilpa.
Yes that's right. As kids we never saw so many societies/groups organizing Durga Puja as they are now. You'll find it difficult to believe, this year in my city (in the city limits) alone there were 504. Competition to make it better, which means more and more expensive has made matters even worse. Imagine, the idol of Dispur (I have uploaded picture here), had worn gold ornaments worth several millions of rupees. Amazing indeed!

  6. Beautiful pictures!
The mention of places like Ulubari, and Dispur brought back vague memories of my time spent in Assam years and years ago.
I feel the the government should not allow these murthies to be sunk in the rivers and the lakes, even Ganesh murthies, they cause so much problems for all of us. Why can't they ban such practice, so that people will have small murthies and keep them in their respective homes.
Celebrating festivals should mean causing harm to our own nation. What do you think?
BTW, I missed your blogs and even Kavita is not to be seen these days.
    Happy celebrations!

  14. I would have been misled in believing that there one more building resembling ouir Parliamant at Geetanagar. After reading the caption I could gather that it is a pandal created for the festival. Nice rep[orting.
